99 psd - missing spuratically - Not consistent

I have a 99 PSD that has 115000 miles. The engine misses on occassions, but not consistenly. It even died once when approaching a stop light. No light are on. I changed the fuel filter and that didn't help. Do they have a filter in the tank, or is there something else i could check?

camshaft position sensor.
just do a search. the cps is a common problem on these trucks and cause all of the problems that you are describing. the reading should clear everything up. just dont buy one from your dealership. you can get it for about half of the price if you get it from an international dealer. just ask if there is anything else we can do. good luck and have fun

I had the same problem. Vibration, hesitation, stalling. 132,000 miles. Changed the cam shaft position sensor and no problems after that. It ran better than it had in 3 months. ~$130 at the dealer. Easy to change. Do a search for CSP sensor.

The cam sensor is usually the best place to start for these kinds of problems.

To answer your fuel tan question.... No, there is not a filter in the tank. There is a strainer at the end of the pick-up tube and there are a couple of screens in the mixing chamber, all of which could potentially plug up, but no actual filter.

Another vote for the cam sensor. My 2000 psd is in the shop today for this problem. I have 96k miles and it's covered under the warranty (with deductible). Problem for me was similar to your description, except the 'service engine soon' light came on. Good Luck.

And count me in too on the CMP sensor. Available at your International dealer for around a lot less than at Ford. Ask for a "camp sensor" for a 1999 T444E.

I have been told that there is a sock type filter in some of the tanks. Someone told me mine had one in it and it was very expensive but mine does not have one. I don't know if there is one in some for sure though.
