I just acquired a 1978 Ford F250 from my grandfather with 49,000 original miles. I know the engine needs some work to run better, like plugs, timing, carb adjustment. I am wondering what else I could do to get some better mileage? Has anyone ever played around with locking hubs on the front to bypass the all time 4 wheel drive? my thought is that this will make day to day driving a lot more pleasant...
YOu can put locking hubs up front, its a common mod. YOu can also make that trasnfer case part time as well. Just do a google search for NP203 conversion. Milemarker is one name brand.
Beeboy is right, there are kits available for converting to part time 4x4. They usually run $50-$100 and have one part in the t-case and new hubs, and neither part is tough to install.
For better mileage... what are you getting now? What engine, carb, trans, rear gears, tire size does your pickup have now? With a 4x4 F250, expect 8-12 mpg and not much better. The part time kit will help, as well as a tune up. When I get a 'new' vehicle, I like to install: cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter and oil change.
