i was driving my 88 bronco ii 2.9L, with air conditioning, 4x4, and a mitsubishi 5 speed transmission, and it wouldn't gain speed going up this hill near my house unless in 3rd gear. being that the engine has 263000+ miles on it, i want to replace it with a 4.0L engine. i am also planning on rebuilding the transmission, and putting a 3 inch james duff lift with 31 x 10.5 in tires. i would especially like to know what would be the best year and model ford to get the 4.0 from to put in mine. i want to keep air conditioning but i read i have to replace the compressor. would this kind of swap be best to go to a junk yard and get the engine and rebuild it myself, or does anyone know of a place with the complete rebuilt engines with wiring harnesses. is the engine, computer, wiring harness, and compressor all i need to replace. i also want to be positive the mitsubishi 5 speed will bolt up to the 4.0 with no drive shaft modifications. also, what would be the best parts to replace when redoing the front end, that aren't included in the james duff lift. i am going to do this in the next month and any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

george

Basically, getting a 4.0L out of any Ranger or Explorer would work. I don't think it really matters what year truck you get it out of. While you're at it, it might also be a good idea to replace the front and rear axels with the truck you're taking the engine from. The Rangers and Explorers use the 8" rear and Dana35 front (I think), which more easily handle larger tires, but that is not a requirement, just a recommendation.
I believe the Mitsubishi 5 speed will bolt to the engine with no problem, but I'm not positive on that.
