I have a 1979 F100 with a 302. I recently took my truck on a long trip and it did suprisingly well, for 3/4 of the trip. I blew out a tire about 25 miles from home and had to sit for a while until a friend brought me a spare. Anyways, when I started it back up, and put it in gear it is running really rough sputtering and backfiring out of the exaust. It idles fine, it only does it under load.
My question is, that when i looked under the hood, it appears that i have some kind of black goop coming out of the ignition module. Has anyone ever seen this before?
The original Motorcraft ignition module in my truck did the same thing. Whatever was used as the potting material in that unit either from heat or age turned soft and flowed out. On my particular truck it did not affect the operation of the module. The module did fail but I can't say it was due to the potting material flowing out. I've always been under the impression that these modules either work or they don't. If you want to replace it though, they are relatively cheap.

It's not supposed to be doing that. It needs to be replaced. A bad module may cause your problems. Get a new module (Motorcraft is best) and use some 1/4" spacers to raise it off the fender, this lets air circulate under it to keep it from getting too hot again.
Fixed it. Turns out the cap and rotor were worn out. Gave the truck a tune up today and she runs like a charm. swapped out the ignition box as well, but it didnt make a difference in how it runs.
