Ordering a truck

I would really like to order a new truck but know nothing about the process. I have always purchased my trucks from dealer stock but finding a V-10, 6 speed, XL, 2wd is going to be a needle in a haystack. I really want what I want as far as options go and don't want to pay for things I don't really need or settle for a truck with the wrong equipment on it. Can somebody walk me through the process? Do you get a good deal when ordering?

I ordered one once and I'll never do it again. The problem is you're stuck with it when it comes in (subject to a few conditions). You can't drive and evaluate it in advance. I'd much rather find one that I can drive first, maybe for a couple of days before buying. All vehicles of the same make and model are just not the same.

I ordered a vehicle for the first time this year (an '05 F150 lariat 4x4) and enjoyed the entire experience. I had done enough research on this site to know EXACTLY what I wanted in the truck and thought it was great that I could place my order for just that vehicle.

As far as rebates go, an ordered truck will be subject to the same ones a lot truck would be.

And when my truck came in, I wouldn't have been "stuck" with it at all. I didn't have to put down any deposit (this is where you weed out the good dealerships from the bad) and if there was something wrong with the truck, I could simply refuse delivery. It's not yours until you sign that paperwork! I even told my salesman that there was a *slight* possiblilty that I would have another job and have to move out of state before my truck got here. No problem! They could have quickly sold my truck anyway, I'm sure.

Of course, the downside is that you have to wait on it, and if you refused that first truck for some reason, you'd have to wait on another. But I think these situations are rare.

If getting the "perfect" truck for you is important, I'd recommend ordering.

Doormatt, if you are anywhere close to NY then get in touch with Jeff Clark here on the forum. I wish I was closer as would have ordered with him. The biggest problem with ordering is waiting and the lack of information from Ford corporate. Dealers get updates and by Friday afternoon they should be able to tell you how its going in the process. I have been very frustrated, not as much as my dealer, but by the lack of details on my order from Ford. In the end though I'll have the truck exactly how I wanted it without giving up on somethings I wanted or getting things I didn't want. I've searched multi-states for a truck exactly matching what I wanted and never found one, though they get close. Any dealer can order you a truck, I would suggest working with their Fleet sales instead of the average sales guy. I've ran across some good dealers on various forums, but Jeff has been one of the best.

Believe me, I had dealt with a terrible (ford) dealership. But if you signed any paperwork in order for them to order your truck, if you had tried to refuse it I really suspect you would have found it difficult to do. My paperwork said the truck had to be different from what was ordered to be refused. Said nothing about letting me off the hook if I just didn't like it.

Point is, buying a new one is hard enough when it's sitting in front of you much less when you have to wait months for it (took 3 months to get mine back in 1993). If you still want to order it, try this. Have them put down in writing that you can refuse it for any reason whatsoever when you look at it and that this won't cost you anything. My guess is they won't do it, but I'd love to hear what happens if you try it.
