Ok, maybe I am showing just how much I don't know about my Bronco, but if someone will be kind enough to tell me exactly where my thermostat is located on 1993 bronco with a 302. I know it is a dumb question and I am sure I will be taunted, but I looked in the Haynes manual and it is not exactly descriptive. I know how to change it, just no clue where it is. Is it next to the throttle body? I would explore my engine, but I really don't have time to. It is underheating and yesterday I bought the thermostat from autozone in between deliveries. (I work at Domino's at night and I am a legal Investigator for the navy during the day. Not exactly a perfect combination, but it pays the bills.) Anyway, if someone will write back and let me know, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
follow the big hose coming from the top of the radiator...it connects to a plate that is bolted to the front of the motor, held on by 2 bolts. unbolt them and the thermostat is behind there. (go easy prying it off once it's unbolted or you'll crack that plate.)... make sure you get a new gasket for it too. good luck.
(don't feel dumb asking those questions, these guys are really smart and don't mind helping the beginners...like you and me!)
Follow the upper radiator hose back to the block. The hose attaches to a water neck. The thermostat is between the water neck and the intake. Remove the water neck to get at it.
I found this great tip when I changed mine a few months ago:
Take a rubber band, the t-stat, a popcicle stick and the housing.
Run the RB through the hose end of the housing, feed the RB through the metal wire on t-stat and back through the housing.
You now have the two ends of the rubber band out the hose end of housing. Take a popcicle stick loop each end of the RB. Now the t-stat is good and tight against the seat in the housing. It can not slip.
Put on the gasket and sealer and bolt up the housing. Now hold ends of RB, take out the popicle sticks. Pull out the RB and you have an installed t-stat.
That's an awesome tip. I replaced the t-stat on an old mazda i had years ago and cracked the houseing cause the t-stat slipped down a fraction. his way its held perfectly in place.
I installed and removed mine three times the night before I found that tip. I'd get everything in place and crank it up - only to find that the thing had slipped again!
For reference, I found that in the engine section of FTE.
