Been hearing some knock out of my 2000 Mazda B2500 4cyl for a while. Mostly
during highway runs in a certain RPM band (around 2100). I can gas it up a
bit and it goes away. Don't drive it much but the trips are mostly back and
forth to work at around 7 miles a trip so the engine does reach operating
temps.
Took it to a dealer and they said that because of low mileage (18,400) the
fuel system was craped up. Did a $260 clean up. On the way back home the
engine still knocked. I called the dealer back and they now claim that I
will need to drive it a while (at least a tank of gas) before it clears up.
They basically checked the "computer". No problems showed up other than a small resistance on the injectors. They pulled an injector and said that it was gummed. Not sure exactly what they did but it took a couple of hours.
I don't disagree that a cleaning probably was needed - the truck is almost 5 years old - but what ever happened to real diagnosis?
Switching to midgrade seemed to help when it first started but it does no good now.
Going dealer hopping tommorrow - hopefully at least one place will have a real mechanic.
