369 ID Tag

I found some type of ID tag attached to a bolt that holds the coil clamp onto the intake. I was wondering if anyone knew what the numbers stand for.
360 73 4
2J11 K 303 A
Also, where exactly are the head casting numbers. I am trying to find out if my heads have the hardened exhaust valves.
Thanks.

The head casting numbers are between the 2nd and 3rd spark plug.

I'm no expert with the tags, but an slightly educated guess would say you have a 1973 360CI motor probably assembled in April. The head castings will be between the two middle spark plugs. You will probably find D2T's in there and yes, they have hardened seats.

Talking Thanks

Wow! You guys are like having a mechanic at home. Keep up the great work and thanks for helping all of us "greenhorns" out here in the real world. It's people like you that make the rest of the average joes want to persue a sometimes overwhelming task of restoring an old truck. Thanks again guys.

Question Quick Question

I checked for the numbers but the only ones that I saw was on the exhaust manifold. The drivers side said C8***** and the pass. side side D2*****.
Am I still looking in the wrong spot or do I have two different types of heads?

I would say that the motor might have had a head replaced at some time in it's life.

The casting number is between the middle spark plugs, maybe they are covered with paint or oil. The manifold wouldn't have the head casting number on it. You probably should get something and scrape around between those two spark plugs, maybe even use a flashlight.
Anyway, D2TE-AA heads are hardened; C8AE-H heads (unless they've been worked) are not.

They are the same casting, the only real difference is that the C8AEH was cast in the 60's and didn't have the hardened valve seats (to my knowledge). The D2TEAA is the same casting just made in the 70's. Some guys on here have mentioned that they have some kind of different hardened valve seat. Your engine has probably been gone through once and they probably just used a C8 head and put hardened seats in it.

There is also a difference in the combustion chamber. The D2's have a jellybean / kidney shaped chamber, whereas the C8's have a D shaped chamber. There is also a very slight difference in chamber volume.

Really,I thought that they were pretty much the same size and shape, I would like to take a look at some compared side by side.

Just look in Steve's book. They're all layed out right there. The C7AE-A combustion chambers look exactly like the 427 low-risers on page 41. The C7's are the ones I'm using in my build. That being said, I've seen pictures on here and other sites that show the C8's having the D shaped chamber, he doesn't explain this in his book.

The C8AE-H and the D2TEAA's have the same 68.1-71.1 Combustion Chamber Volume numbers.

My C-8AEH and D2TEAA heads had the same combustion chamber but maybe there are some variations (I will have to look at my book). Why don't more people run the C-1AE heads? They have bigger runners and supposedly flow a lot better even with the stock size valves in them...
