2000 F250 SD - As with nearly every one I have seen with the leather wraped steering wheel, my wheel is also worn down where my hand rests while driving. Is there a replacement cover (not the cheap slip on) that can be used to make it look new again. Has anyone tried to make their own. I was thinking about trying to fab on from upholstery leather. A little mervous about removing the Air Bag. any thoughts ???
I bought a Wheelskins cover off Ebay for about $30. High quality leather lace on style. Took about an hour to lace up, but looks original. Not the cheesy type your grandaddy used If you can't find them on Ebay do a Google search for Wheelskins. Next best option to replacing the entire wheel.
Steve
i have had 2 wheelskins and liked the look of both. they look great for the price. be sure to get the laces tight and measure your steering wheel to get the right model. the 2 tone models really add a custom look.
Buy a whole new replacement wheel. I did it for my F150 and it came with all the cruise control buttons etc....leather wrapped from the factory. Less than $100.00. Installed it in about 15 minutes. Disconnect airbag first!

Jeeezzzz, your lucky, up here (Canada) for my 97 leather new from the dealer $350 not installed. I don't have air bag just cruise controls.
I just bought a black leather wheel at my local dealer for $190 to replace the stock XLT wheel. Tan/grey were cheaper. Dealer installed for 20 bucks. Check out www.ford.com, they have them on their website.
I bought a wheelskins for my 96 Explorer and was VERY disappointed with the quality and fit. It looked nothing near the quality or fit of the original. So I went to a leather supply store and purchase a good quality piece of leather and the tools to stich it up. All for less than the Wheelskins wheel. I also bought some new neoprene from the local foam supply store. BUY ENOUGH TO COVER THE ENTIRE WHEEL NOT JUST THE WORN SPOTS. I replaced the worn spots and wished I would have replaced it all because the old foam is breaking down faster than the new. Not a big deal but it would have been nice to have all new foam.
I removed the original cover and left the wheel attached. I then used the original as a pattern to make the new one. I'm not a leather worker but I do know how to be careful, pay attention to details, and use a razor blade. I used an awl to make the stitch holes in the new cover. Once that was done I glued in the new neoprene. Then I wrapped the wheel and stitched it up. It was tedious but worth it! The new cover fit as good as the original and looked even better because it was NEW!
If I can do.......it anyone can. It's also nice to drive around knowing that I covered it myself. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
I have a '99 Ford SD CC Lariat, and for the last 2 years the steering wheel leather has been a disaster, and the foam underneath has disintegrated, leaving me with a wheel that made the whole interior look like hell.
Not finding any quality, relatively inexpensive lace ons at retailers or on the web, I went to my auto/boat interior upholstery specialist who did a search for Ford oem replacement leather steering wheels (with airbag module and cruise control) and found they are available for $170.00. With installation, which took about 45 minutes while I waited, it was $220.00 out the door- and I feel like I just took delivery of a brand new truck compared to what it was!!! Ford must know of this being a common problem, and some vendor has tooled up and is producing these fairly cheaply. Spend the xtra dough and don't waste your time if your wheel is really bad, I was expecting it to be $400-$500.00, and was pleasantly surprised on Monday morning when they had me in and out quickly...
