One that worries me most is body rust inside the liftgate frame, near the liftgate hinge on the passenger's side. Rust there is significant and I'm sure I need to fix that. There is also some minor rust below the liftgate on both sides, and minor rust is evident under the paint in a few spots on the lower doors and rocker panel areas.
Is there a web site that offers good advice on dealing with rust repairs such as this? Is it something I should seek out a body man to do?
I like this little Bronco and would like to keep it for a long time. Just wondering if a bit of rust like this is normal (I suspect it is) and whether I should treat it or just ignore it.
Helpful advice, treat it! If you want to keep it, either sand the rust off and then paint over it with a good paint job, or have a body man do it. Cause you have to disassemble everything and repaint everthing around the rust or else you'll have some more later on.
If it is not rotted through my best advise to you is to sandblast. This will remove any rust inside of the pits that will pop up later. Do NOT use bondo to fill in the pits. It absorbs moisture and will start poking through the paint after a few months. My brother found this out the hard way. We use either dura-glass or metal to metal to fill in the pits. Then you can use bondo to finish the job. I know how you feel, I am in the process of doing the same thing to my 90 bronco II. The only thing is back where my lift gate hinges are is rotted through so I am going to have one of my good freinds weld some new steel in there. I have seen him do it before in the same spot so I know it can be done.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
I have a 87 B2 and it was rusted trough the two rear quaters I used Duraglass nad rubber undercoating (after it was dry) for the fenderwell, and have not had any rust re-appear as of yet, just a little surface rust. but Nothing that a little sanding and primer wont take care of.But as for the rott through rust the fix job is still holding up. its been 4 months
My advice don’t wait to fix it I am doing that right now on mine both sides are rusted on the inside of the hatch and around to the quarter panel on the right side. Don’t do like I have to get new sheetmetal, diegrinder with a lot of wheels and fiberglass mine is to the point when I drive it goes up and down and my floor in the back flexes down.
