transmission problems

I recently bought an 87 F250 with the 6.9 and a C6. It has 120k mi and runs good but the transmission doesn't seem quite right. It doesn't shift until the RPMs are very high and then it slams into the next gear, also it takes a while to shift into reverse sometime. I replaced the vaccum pump to get the brakes working and that helped the shifting some but it still isn't right. Do these transmissions use vaccum to help the shifting? Any ideas what I should check next.
Thanks.

There is a vacuum shift control on the drivers side of the injection pump. I can not tell you how to adjust it though, mine is a manual tranny.

Your not the only one. The truck is slow to engage and pounds into 2 and Drive, It drop out of drive if the speed is below 30-35. If it wasn't for the rough ride(over kill replacement front springs) I'd bitch about it more to the boss.

There's also a vacuum modulator on the right side (passenger side) rear. There may/maynot be an adjustable screw. You have to remove the rubber line and use a flashlight to look inside. If it's adjustable, use a small flat blade screw driver (most used that though I have seen a few hex heads) Turn clockwise to increase the pressure, counter clockwise to decrease.

Sounds more like the control unit is out of wack though. Usually when a modulator goes bad it starts to leak tranny fluid.
