hey just wondering how did yall exit the pipe? just cut off at the rear axel? turned down under the truck? or like Y pipe in to duel tips or somthing. dose it really sound as good as they say? i hear people like it better than flowmasters or any thing else. please let me know.
The original cats are still in place, I came off the second cat with a piece if 18" pipe 2 1/4 " diameter pipe and then a 90 degree elbow and then another 18" pipe. This put the pipe about a foot infront of the rear wheel. Cost about 20.00 bucks including the clamps and hanger. With the two cats in place I dont think the valves have anything to worry about, they should provide enough back pressure to prevent any problems They just dont do much inthe way of noise reduction like a muffler would. There hasnt been any change in power or gas mileage, It has made shifting gears a lot more fun.
I used to run just the cats and a tailpipe out the back. it really isnt very loud if your running cats. With no cats it would be hideously loud. Dont worry about burning your valves, thats an old legend.
I asked on person one time what was best glass packs, straight pipes, or flowmaters, when i told him what kind of engine i had he suggested a muffler, glad he did cause if you want a good sound i suggest you get a v-8 cause my personal opinion is a six sounds like a mad mosquito
ooo finally a question for me =D. my set up is as follows: 2 1/2" pipe off the first cat for about 2-3 feet, then to a 45* bend and into a 3 1/2" x 20" stainless steel echo tip. it exits right after the cab, but i hope to change that by getting a longer piece of pipe so it actually exits before rear tire.
BTW, the valve burning thing is bunk. friend up here at school has a early 80s F-150 with a 300 and has about 2 feet of pipe off the manifold and has ran that for years with no problems.
please keep at least one cat...as i said before, we all breath the same air and lets try to keep it clean =D

Mine sounds more like a barking rotweiler with a bad disposition
The six doesn't have enough performance to sound good without the cats. One cat off made a difference, both cats off didn't make much differnce, but it sounded terrible, like a huge exhaust leak. no gain in taking both cats off.
ok i have a 1980 F-100 custum stepside. with the 300. when i got it the exhaust was rusted off took it to a muffler shop and all replaced including the cat and muffler. now i want it better sounding. if i come off the only cat ive got and run it back passed the cab could i turn it down their and get the same sound or do i need a tip?
on my 84 300-6, i've got 2 1/4" straight pipe to a 30" glasspack, then runs back over the axle and exits on the pass. side just in back of the rear tire...it sounds alright, but i'm looking for something with a bit deeper tone, and probably turning it down (eventually) just in front of the rear axle, so it throws the sound down to the pavement, and letting the pavement disperse the sound from there...when i finally get around to building an engine up, i'll either run true dual exhaust into dual glasspacks or flowmasters or run true dual straightpipes turned down just ahead of the rear axle...
When i bought my 93 F150, its exhaust was, well i dont remember what it sounded like. It was stock. Thats weird, i cant think of my truck sounding all quite and ****. Whell anyway, after the muffler, anywhere there was a turn in the plumbing, there was a hole. While driving one time, it came off. I was left with 2 cats and a muffler, nothing after the muffler. It was cool when it was cold, cuz you could start the truck up, and the white condesation watever stuff would like, rise up from all around my truck. But prolly not very CO safe. So i paid the money and got a flowmaster cat back run at the muffler shop. Its a mild 1, but it sounds nice. I can hear it if the windows down and im below 40. Its a 2.5 inch 1 in 2 out from the flowmaster, over the axel 2 MASSIVE 3 inch 2 foot long tips hehe...
Also meant to say. Was looking at a high flow cat, or maybe even more. Ive seen these headers that are dual exhaust, like 3 and 3 exhaust ports. And you can get that choppy v8 sound from them. Maybe those, and then thru a older corvette style cat that is 2 in 2 out. Then maybe straights with resonator tube, or a 2 in 2 out loud *** muffler and then a 90 degree turn and out under each door or slightly behind.

I got an 83 with hedders that go from dual 2.5 inch pipe into a single 3 inch single in, dual out flowmaster 40 series and then 2.5 inch dual tailpipes out behind the tires. Most people think its a 351.
