The 5R110W, or TorqShift, automatic transmission is a redesign of the E40D/4R100. Basically, the gear ratio for first gear was lowered from 2.71 : 1 to 3.09 : 1. To get second gear the overdrive clutch is engaged to give a ratio of 2.2 : 1. Third gear is now the same ratio as the old second gear, 1.54 : 1. The TorqShift is advertised as being a 5 speed automatic, when actually it has six forward speeds. On cold engine operation (below 0 degrees) the overdrive clutch is engaged in third gear for a ratio of 1.09 : 1. The transmission will shift directly to sixth from fourth and fifth is skipped. On a warm engine the shift pattern would be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th (direct drive), 6th.
I spoke with Brian of BTS (Brians Truck Shop), he is the E4OD/4R100 Guru. He said that Ford stepped back ten years into the past when they designed the torqueshift 5r110 transmission. He didnt only tell me, he showed me. The weak point is The old style sprag clutch. There is a much better/ updated one but ford used the old style which is prone to failure. WHY ???? He also went on to say that Fords programming will never work with this transmission. He has hard parts out now for the Tqshift, but is still working on his stand alone control module. He said that the transmission would be fine as long as no HP upgrades or heavy towing is done. Guess I have to run the Quad 160 in the stock mode until I can afford a Xmsn upgrade. I think psd60fx4 can attest to this, last I spoke to him on the phone his Xmsn was on its way out the door.
