I have a 97 Explorer w/auto 4WD. Lately when I'm going around 60-70 mph and I let my foot off the gas and start to slow significantly I get a loud buzzing or rachet noise. The tranny shifts fine, and it doesn't buck or heave, etc. The sound will raise and lower pitch depending on how much gas I give it, but will stop when I suddenly tap my foot on the gas a couple of times. It is not a problem at lower speeds, and it doesn't even happen every time at high speed. I have noticed that the tach seems to drop about 2k when the sound starts.
The transmission light does not go on. Also the fluid is fine, the color is right, and there is no burning odor.
The truck has 148k on it but I just had a new torque converter, valve control body and all new soft transmission parts replaced last December. I'm hoping I'm not in for another $2,600 tran job.
