bought a 1993 ford f-250 to find it has a blown head gasket. got a 70`s long block in the garage, is it usable? if usable will it be compatable with the computer and fuel injection stuff on the newer vehicle? andy help would be appreciated. tracy
That 70's block won't work with the fuel injection. The ports in the heads are totally different. Also, depending on what year the 70's block is, it'll be internally balanced where as your 93 is externally balanced. The only way the 70's block would work is if you took out the F.I stuff and carbed the truck.
you guys worry to much about internall and external balancing.Take the harmonic balancer, balancer sleeve, crank, rods, pistons, and depending on if its a standard or auto the flexplate or flywheel and pressure plate.Pay the $150-$300 to have it balanced at an engine machine shop///Use the heads, and exhaust manifolds off of the 93 and all of the other fuel injection parts on the 70's block and you'll be fine
why can`t i use the shortblock 460 in place of the 7.5 as long as i use the flywheel off of the 460 and the balancer off the 460 and the top end[heads and induction] off of the 7.5?
Using the top end will be fine (93), but I don't know about the harmonic balancer and the sleeve being the same from the 460 to the 7.5,(You could always get a crank sleeve at a salvage yard if it won't work).as long as you get them machine balanced it will be fine.I had to use internally and externally ballanced parts on my 460 rebuild and it didn't matter after my machinist got done with it.And my 460 purrrss!!!
You can put EFI on a 70's engine. YOu just need to use the later year heads. The newer heads bolt right onto the 70's 460 no problem.
If you can find early 80's industrial heads (off a 460 used in a combine, bulldozer, something along those lines), you'll get the large valves and better flow of the older heads, with the nice modern EFI intake ports, and you can build it that way.
I discovered this by accident, and thats the combination I'm building for my twin turbo crewcab. 70's truck block, 81 industrial heads, 92 fuel injection intake, bored and stroked to 500cid, with GM EFI instead of ford. I already test fit the heads and the intake, and it works.
I found the heads at a core place... I'd give you the numbers off them however they are in transit down to Arkansas to my machinist. If you want the casting numbers, I'll get them for you when they arrive in a few days - I sent them goat express because I'm cheap and they are heavy
