Unhappy Problems after heavy rain, misfire

Hello all, I need help, i have a '98 F-150 v8 4.6 triton, last week i was driving back home trough heavy rain and suddenly at a red light the truck started to misfire, then the next morning the problem was there again but after of 10 min driving it was running fine again, then the next morning the same since today, a friend of mine told me that it could be a coil pack problem, but i dont want to rush and buy the coil before having a second opinion from you guys, my doubt about the coil is because after 10 min of driving the truck runs fine, so i don't know if a bad coil could present this simptoms, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Exclamation Codes retreived

I pulled the codes and this is what i got P0303 and P0401, P0303 is a misfire on #3 and P0401 its says something about Exaust Gas Recirculation problem, last time that the truck was in the shop they told me that the EGR valve is ok, maybe it is the EGR sensor i guess, any ideas on how to fix the problems?

Thanks guys

sounds like the cops got wet and it started to missfire, then after it dried up it was ok again. I would check all the cop connections and maybe put some dielectric grease on the connectors.

Just replace the COP. That's what is going to fix the problem. You could waste alot of time troubleshooting, like I did, when it's the COP. Now, for the EGR system. You might have to do some troubleshooting.

If you snoop around in the forum here you'll find tons of info about the P0401 but if you have any questions after some searching there are quite a few guys here that will be able to help with it.

had same problem on my 97. after several plug changes and continuous problem, I got out the tracing powder. seems that h2o was finding its way into the plug hole and shorting out. Cylinder varied depending on how truck was sitting. replaced water dam on cowel (97 was bad design) and fixed problem for about a year. Happened again and boy o boy was I p'oed. Got the trace out again and my washer fluid nozzle wasn't sealed on the hood. Water came trhough down the washer fluid hose, onto electrical box cover and from there dripped into spark plug hole. Sealed washer nozzle and no problems to date. Lots of head scratching to solve this one. But believe it has been solved. Hope this helps, and hopefully not too confusing. If you need more info, please feel free to contact. Hope this helps

COP = Coil On Plug

It replaces the distributor system. Each spark plug has it's own COP

Mostly to have very short secondaries, Coil Over Plug (Coil Near Plug on some makes) puts a coil that only handles that one cylinder very close to the plug. I'd be surprised if they had them on '98s. If they do, swap them and see if the problem follows. You can hook a scope up to the Ford COPs because they have a maybe 4 inch plug wire.

I just joined today. Wish I found you guys about 3 months ago when I replaced my first cop. Just replaced my second one yesterday (for another $200). My '03 Expedition (5.4) apparently has bad design for spark plug orientation and put them vertical with 'wells' that can't evacuate water. Do you think going through car wash could get water up onto the heads and down into the wells? The wash I use has pretty strong power spray and I opted for the underbody spray after a salty week last week.
If so, doesn't someone make a cover or boot to seal the area off from moisture? One thread reply said to use some dielectric grease to seal these holes - is this the only solution?

dielectric grease

i would look at the areas that weekendland mentioned. buying a new cop to replace the one that is missfireing will only solve the problem if the miss fire is due to moisture in the coil. this isn't your problem because the mf goes away when warmed up. the easiest way to fix the problem is the dielectric grease. the grease simply keeps the moisture out. next find where the moisture comes from. be careful around your plugs. just replacing the cop without finding the source of the moisture will only leed to headaches again. ps there is usually a resistance test you can do on coils to see if they are bad i haven't looked for this for the new cop systems but i'm sure that someone will know it.
