I have a 2001 Supercrew 4x4 70,000 miles and recently while taking off from a dead stop, I hear a metallic clanking noise!? (only during hard acceleration) It sounds like a tinny metallic noise? (Almost like when you used to get a stone in an old style vehicle with metal hub caps....like a tink, tink, tink noise...sorry the best I can describe it)
Also I have noticed at about the same time, the vehicle vibrates at highway speeds ( bad @ 60, 70-76, but OK @ 80-85) Not sure if this is related?
I read about the dry yoke syndrome, but the vehicle doesn't have a clunking noise, but rather the noise that I previously mentioned.
Sounds like a u-joint as well to me. That tinck sound is the cross trying to move in an otherwise seized cap. Thats what is probably causing the vibration, if it gets bad enough it will cause a lot of damage.
Definately check the U-joints. I let my old Bronco go with this sound, and wound up breaking not only the ujoint, but the yoke in the double cardon joint as well. Luckily it held together enough to get me home...about 10 miles at speeds no more then 15MPH all the way.
Thanks for the advice guys!! I will start with the U-Joints this Thursday.
It has been a while since replacing U-Joints, is there anything I need to know on how to get the U-Joints off the driveshaft? I do have the 12 point 12mm socket, any advice on special tools or procedures to remove the joints themselves will be appreciated!
The biggest thing i can think of is to be careful when pressing the caps out of the flange, they break very easly (the flange that is). I have an old pinion flange that I bolt to it to keep it from breaking.
