Ported vs Manifold vacuum

Can someone please explain the difference?
Particularly as they relate to the locations on the 300.

Ported vacuum is vacuum originating above the throttle plate, since the tap for it is at that point no vacuum is obtained at idle. Manifold vacuum is gotten anywhere below the throttle plate. As far as how it relates to the 300 engine I'd have to dust off the books,
but I do believe they used ported on the advance side of the distributor, and manifold
on the retard side of the engines equipped with the dual chamber advance unit.
