Perplexed

I have a 90 Ranger 4x4 w/ 2.9 v-6. I recently had the heads replaced because I was losing coolant into the oil. I don't drive the vehicle daily and the problem was resolved immediately. About 6 months and 1000 miles after the head job I started losing coolant again. I returned the vehicle to the mechanic. The heads were magnafluxed and found to be good. He said the head gasket blew and replaced it. He also said the heat tabs melted on the heads. The temperature guage did go to the high side of normal but the radiator never spewed. I may have driven 20-30 miles with this condition. The vehicle has 110,000 miles and runs great otherwise. I would like to get another 2-3 years out of my truck, or would this be a good time to sell?

You might check and see if the 90 2.9 used torque-to-yield head bolts. If such is the case, they are to not be reused after disassembly! They are recommended by Ford to be a one-use-only fastener.

I will check a couple of manuals I have here and see about the head bolts. However, from the way you describe your problem, that is the first thing that comes to mind.

Clevite does show a head bolt set for you 2.9L V-6. It is part number GS33221. They are torque-to-yield bolts. The torque spec for them is as follows: Step One: 22 ft.-lbs. Step Two: 51-55 ft.-lbs. Step Three: WAIT FIVE MINUTES. Step Four: Turn each bolts 90 DEGREES.
