I have a 1997 F-150 V-8 4x4. My truck was making some awful grinding noises, and when taken to the Ford dealer, a diagnosis revealed that I needed new CV half shafts, upper and lower arm controls to the tune of $2,000. I have the Haynes book and have read all your posts regarding the maneuvers (thanks), but I now am trying to remove the torsion bar from the lower control arm and it is stuck. No amount of penetrant, or muscle in the form of hammerage is loosening the hold. What else can I try? I appreciate any thoughts.
Are you removing the lower control arms because the ball joints are bad?
The ball joints can be replaced without replacing the whole control arm and it's much easier.
Removing the torsion bar from the control arm takes tons of beating, sometimes you have to cut the arm around the torsion bar.
I assume you've removed the "key" from the rear of the torsion bar so there is no tension on the bar?
The real issue, well two real issues, is that the torsion bar adjuster arm is stuck, and then the torsion bar is also adhered to the control arm. I am looking at cutting the torsion bar off right now, and just getting new ones.
Mine took *LOTS* of beating to get them unstuck... Don't be bashful! I would cut the control arm before the torsion bar, most of the damage should be on the control arm at this point.
