For 2 months I've been enjoying the reliability of a solid 1988 Ford Bronco II 2.9L. Recently though, I've been plagued with coolant problems. Initially I couldn't see a leak, but now the problem has got worse. The water starts dripping as soon as I put more in. It seems to be dripping from some bolts underneath the engine, rather from any pipes or the radiator itself. Has anyone got any advice. Is a sealant likely to work? I'd love to be able to fix this myself - as I have limited funds.
The water pump appeared to be the culprit as it was often wet with greenish water. I had a local shop replace the pump and while there they pressure tested the coolant system and lo and behold the upper radiator had a pressure leak.
So a new water pump plus a new radiator fixed mine. Possibly the water pump was not really leaking. But it was actually the least costly item of the work...and it did have 142k miles on it anyway.
i had the same problem on my 2.9. I changed the water pump and the leak stopped. Be sure to get a new thermostat. Also, if you get an aluminum water pump you need to switch to the new coolant. I don't remember what it's called but its the new orange stuff. Good luck!
