Just put the napa 6637 filter on my truck like kwikkordead discribed. Worked beautifully. Anyone thinking of getting rid of the stock airbox and going aftermarket checkout kwikkordeads album for an excellent filter setup for 50 bucks and no more leaky airbox.

Guys I need to say that this was not my idea in the first place. I just read someone elses post a while back and wrote the part number down. When it was filter time I went up to NAPA and saw that the filter would work, bought the thing, put it on and took the picture.
This looks really great. My box is leaking at one corner and need to fix it, after seeing this I think Im gona go this route, but I have a question, I had someone tell me it was important to suck as much cool air to the turbo as possible, hense the intake opening in front by the radiator,so am wondering if the air temp that is under the hood would ever be a problem for the turbo. What do you think.. 99er in Snohomish
I don't think it will be a problem, It's true the underhood temps get a lot warmer than ambient but it's only (I would guess) 200 on a blazing hot day while you are underway. It gets up over 300 on the heat soak period but the engine is shut off then. Plus you have an intercooler that cools off the intake air before it enters the engine.
The intake opening at the front of the truck is blocked anyways by the headlight mounting pannel unless you done the mod for that.. I think the same as Kwik.. shouldn't make to much of a difference.. I think I will be doing the same in the near future....

Is that filter cleanable or do you just change the whole thing out. If so how long can you go between filters
It's a disposable filter.

You mean the ambient air temperature sensor that is mounted in the back side of the bottom half? I detached it and zip tied it to a brake line in such a way as to not interfere with anything.
It's signal is one of the readings that the ECM uses for engine operation. It's name pretty much says what it does. I don't think it see's a whole lot warmer temperatures. One of the the uses is the fast idle when warming up on a cold day. A couple of days ago I was letting the truck warm up on a cool morning. I opened the hood and touched my nice warm fingertip to the thermocouple and the engine immediatly slowed down. I let it go and it sped right up again.
common sense works great. if you are in doubt, remove it, stick a light inside it, if you cant see the light or see lots of debris, toss it. everyone has different habits and situations (dust and highway driving). I have noticed that my turbo spools up a lot quicker since the upgrade.
Just woundering if it has any effect on injection timing, but once your moving I quess underhood temps drop off anyway. About what temp do you go up on high idle. Thanks Eckart

My truck won't do the high idle thing until it's below about the mid 60's and then it's sort of graduated. If it's warmer then it's only picks up a tiny bit. Cooler temps and it goes right up to 1100 or 1200 rpm and stays there until warm.
