Hello I am perplexed and I hope anyone who has experienced this type of thing may be able to help. Every time I go to start my 89 Ford F 150 inline 6, the starter will not stop working even after it starts, It makes a real bad grinding sound.. I replaced the starter, selenoid, the key cylinder, any ideas?
If you have replaced the starter it is probably not the problem, although depending on where you got the replacement from it may still be your difficulty.
Have you replaced the starter solenoid on the right fender? If they get badly pitted inside on the contacts they can hang together. I would also check the signal wire (the small one form the ignition switch) to see if when you start it and the starter motor stays engaged there is still fire coming from the ignition switch. If it stays hot I would suspect the ignition switch (as opposed to the lock cylinder).
I would start with the solenoid, though, if you have not already done it.
My moneys on the ignition switch, the electrical part on the lower end of the steering column.
I think you are probalby right but the fender mounted solenoid is so cheap and quick I figured eliminate that first. Should be under $15 and 15 min to replace.
fixed!! I found that the starter needed to be shimmed... It was were because the old one was not shimmed and it worked fine for years but then the other day it all of a sudden was too close... Then it went.. But now all ended well, Thanks for your advice!
