I have a 92 Ex manual everything. I want a good trail vehicle. No rock climbing, just trails. What do I need to do to this one? I have put new BFG Long Trails on it. What else, but not extreme? Thanks for any input.
For basic trails I'd think maybe an electric winch, towhooks, folding shovel, come-along, farm jack, etc. depending on how serious the trails are. I'd be very cautious about any lifts with the narrow wheel base. I know there are a lot of good trail vehicles out there with narrow base and high center of gravity of many different makes, but it's just not my thing.
Thanks. I have seen a 2000 lb electric winch from Harbor Freight for about $250. Would this be an acceptable one to use? The tow hooks make sense. HF Also has a come-along for sale as well. Thanks again.
2000 lb would probably be OK. Just remember winches are rated for rolling loads, don't try to use it to lift a ton. Also, I would suggest a ****** block to go along with the winch if one doesn't come with it. This can allow an approximate doubling of the pulling capacity. Pay close attention to how you mount your winch, as the mount must endure all of the loading when pulling.
On top of items like a Come Along and Shovel, it would be also nice to have a extra 5gal Gas Can or two. A full metal cargo rack would be nice to mount the shovel, gas can and Hi-Jack too (Not to mention some PIAA Lights). Upgrading your shocks to something a little more 'beefier' might benefit you, I've read alot about aftermarket shocks that work well both offroad and on that don't break the bank (Rancho RSX, Edelbrok IAS, Monroe Reflex, etc). A good GPS might be something you would want to look into. Don't forget a little survival kit to go in the back in case you end up having to spend a night (or week) out there, you never know.
Thanks for the help. You've given some good advise. I have replaced the shock with the Monroe Reflex. They were on sale, and I did all four. I have also somewhat created a kit with blankets, some food, water bottles, flares, tool kit, tarps and a few other things in a big plastic tub. It's one of the " grab on the way out the door' things. I don't really know what a ****** block is. Sounds like a block and tackle thing?
****** block is a pulley with a hook that can be opened up to put the cable into it. It will allow you to make a simple double line block and tackle arrangement.
