I am restoring a 73 Bronco. I have some rust in the floorboards and bought a "rust stopper" at my local Napa. They said it worked well and when I wire brushed the surface rust off and brushed this stuff on it turned the remaining pits of rust black. Does anyone know if this will work well or do I need to buy something like por-15. Thank you.
Thank you. The napa stuff you can paint over too and I am planning to do so. I'm more curious if any of this anti-rust stuff really works or if I will just have more rust down the road. I kind of think that if Napa has been using it for years and years it probably works but was just curious what you all think. I know the por15 has a good reputation but have never seen it in stores.
if you go to the por 15 website they got alot of info and alot more products you should check it out it is a little expensive though but it is worth saving your truck
Phosphoric Acid will kill rust. "Ospho" is a retail version (a little more expensive) but should do the trick. Keep it off of your skin and paint as soon as the rust is gone.
I have recently used some diluted phosphoric acid on a resto project and it turned out well. I purchased a 5gal container at a local chem supply shop for about $55. At about 1:10 (phos:h2o) it didnt take much.
I appreciate all the info. I just don't want to have to cut my floorboards out five years down the road. I will have to check out the por site and into the phosporic acid. Again, thank you for the input
I've used the Miracle Paint from Bill Hirsch and I have to say that it's really tuff stuff. You paint right over the rust, just remove the dirt and grease and it forms a rock hard finish. I've used it on frames and even after a few years of road salt, the paint shows no sign of being effected by the salt... it's still shiny black.
Just don't get it on your skin - I have to use Brillo to get it off my hands.
