4x4 problems

i have a 86 bronco II i used my 4x4 for first time in about a year, when i shifted into 4h it felt like it bound up in the front and was slipping. so first thing i thought was my one of my hubs went bad so iput the front end up on blocks, locked in the hubs with transfer case in in 2h and turned my driver side wheel it turned fine along with my front driveshaft both sides did this.now i put the transfer case in 4h and both sides turned together but the shaft did not move is this normal? i thought the wheels would lock like it was in gear. i also noticed that my front axle shaft u-joints have alot of play in them to where the knuckles touch, is this normal? this is my first 4x4 so im kinda lost can anyone help!

The front differential is a basic open differential. When it's up on blocks in 2H the wheels and driveshaft are all free to spin. When you put in in 4H, the front driveshaft is no longer free to spin. However, the wheels can both spin if (and only if) they spin in opposite directions at the same speed. Is this what you observed? If so, this is normal.

The u-joints should have very little play in them, certainly not to where they contact something else. Is this what's happening?
