I have had my truck for about 6 months now. I have had also 7 loaner cars while mine has been in the shop. I think my truck was built on a Friday afternoon. It has been plagued with problems. First the AC wouldn't work, and then the rear differential was leak, now the latest is this engine surging problem. It is more pronounced when the ac is on, but will occur when it is not running. All of the surging occurs when the rpm is below 1500. The most noticeable is when you are sitting at a stoplight. It will almost die. The basic description is as follows. While sitting a stoplight the engine will make the normal diesel rattle but the noise slowly goes away until it almost sounds like a normal engine. The rpm will then drop to about 400 to 500 and shutter. There then will be a loud pop and the diesel rattle will return. This whole sequence will take about 3 to 5 seconds and then it will repeat it. The problem is an intermittent one so when I take to the dealer they have a hard time duplicating it. Any suggestions?
My engine did the same thing so I took it in and they checked everything and could not figure it out, after reflash, etc etc, they finnally did a check on the fuel pressure regulator and it was messed up. They changed that and my truck runs absolutely perfect.
Also having the problem with my May 04 built excursion.
erratic idle...sounds like its heart stops
also while stopped and highway cruising, engine speed will increase or "rev up" briefly
I first thought bad fuel, but pressure reg. is possible I suppose
I'll take it back in to the shop.........
