Help! I am installing a new brake controller in a 1999 F150, and need to go thru the firewall, but I can't find any existing holes. Does anyone have an idea, or do I have to drill a hole?
I had a 98 F150 for my brake controller I think I plugged right into the port, or I may have spliced into the wires (can't remember which rig I had to splice into) but I didn't have to go through the firewall. Are you sure you need to?
It is a Reece controller, does not have a plug, just four wires. The instructions say to wire it to the battery (+/-) thru a 20 amp circuit breaker. The other two wires go to the brake pedal, and to the plug at the rear of the vehicle.
Look close at the firewall, there should be rubber gromets already there, near the brake peddle or the stearing colume, carefully make a hole in one of these (I used an ice pick on my old dodge) and push your wires through.
JBrent--does your '99 have the tow package? If it already has the plug on the bumper, you'll be better off getting a wiring harness from Ford that will plug into the brake controller plug under your dash, and connect the harness and controller wires together, then just plug it into the Ford connector. My '99 F150 XLT had the connector from the factory.
Hoppy and other aftermarket sources has a direct plug in harnass available at most parts stores. Just splice it or solder/tape or heat shrink wrap the wires to the wiring on your controller and plug in under the dash. Most trucks have the plug under the dash. Some may not have the fuses or relays under the hood or the trailer brake wire running to the back harnass. Mine did. Of course you can bypass Ford's relays and fuses and wire diectly to the battery but you only need to do so if you are braking more than 4 axles and need a larger amp fuse. I bought a controller from Southwest Wheel/Brakecontroller.com and they sold a plug in with my controller. I've since bought one at a local parts store.
