Question: I have a 1996 F150 XLT with automatic 4X4. There is a push button on the dash that engages it. My question is, everytime you engage the 4X4 and then push the button to turn it off, do you always have to backup the vehicle about 10 ft, to disengage the front hubs, before driving it?
yes.....backing up releases the internals of the hub and frees it up. like mustang said just go ahead and switch to manuals cause the autos will leave you high and dry when you are in the low and wet!
actually mustang...Warn used to be the best, now MileMarker has come out with an even better set. what makes it better? it is almost completely made of metal....only thing plastic is a lil ring inside. got a buddy running 35 spline MM's on his bronco and has beat the crap outta them at Tellico a few times and they have help up nicley. before MM's, he had Warns and he busted the pass side twice on the same trip! Just some FYI of the day.
BTW....the MM's are quite a bit cheaper than Warns right now cause they are fairly new, so now would be a good time to get them. I am about to get a set to put on my 96 PSD.
if you have the 3 cap screw auto hubs then yes you need to purchase a conversion kit or go to a j-yard and get them....all the conversion kit is is 2 lock nuts and a lock washer.
if you have the 5 cap screw auto hubs then no, it is a direct replacement and will bolt straight in
