pinging

My dad and I just finished putting in his crate 400 in his 77 4x4. The cam is completely stock. Heads are stock. Compression is stock. We put an edlebrock performer intake and 650 carb on it. When we run the timing per spec, the truck pings pretty bad under a load. When I back the timing back to where the pinging is acceptable, the thing is really hurting for power. If we change the cam, will it help with the pinging? I had always assumed that detonation was tied more to compression than the profile of the cam, but I learn more everyday.

Thanks,
Sam

You probably pulled the EGR and threw it away... When that is done you get what is called an EGR ping. Adjust the vacuum advance unit. There are a number of threads here on the subject. Make sure your vacuum and mech advance is hooked up properly also. The vacuum advance used a vacuum switch and must be ported to the correct vacuum sources.

You may also have to enrich the carb a bit.
