Brake Light Problems

Question Brake Light Problems

I have an 1985 Ford F250 and have no brake lights. Blinkers work, but there are no flashers. There is no power to the brake light switch. I tried the flasher on another pick-up and it worked the flashers. All fuses under the dash are good. Any suggestions on what I should check?

There is no power to the brake light switch
The brake switch is fed directly from the fuse box. Concentrate in this area.

Does the power go thru the flasher? I tried to use a jumper from power to the wire at the brake switch to see if the lights would work. On one wire it shorted out and blew a fuse on the other it did nothing.

The flasher is fed from the fuse box. The brake switch is also fed from the fuse box. These two circuits are then fed into the steering column up to the turnsignal switch. The turnsignal switch is where these two signals are are co-ordinated together to operate the brake/turn filaments in the rear bulbs.

One side of the brake switch goes to the turnsignal switch. The other side to the fuse box. Neither one of these wires should blow a fuse. The wire from the fuse box to the brake switch should be hot all the time.

Thumbs up new problem

Thanks for the advice. I found a problem at the fuse box, when I conected that I had power to my brake switch, but when I tried the brake lights or flashers I blew a fuse. So from what you suggested I pulled the steering wheel off and checked the wires up there. With the steering wheel off every thing worked fine. I could see where the back of the steering wheel had been rubbind on the wire for the brake and flashers. When I got to checking things out I noticed that there is a lot of slop in the steering wheel both up and down and sideways ( it has tilt steering ) it appears that there is so much play that the wheel sags enough that the back can rub the wires.
Is there any way to adjust that or do I have danger of something in there coming completly lose and losing my steering? I have the wheel off again and was trying to see if there is a way to get to the steering joint from the end ( I assume ther must be some type of swivel joint ) thanks, logger

I have never investigated this before, but part of the tilt steering mechanism may be made out of pot metal or aluminum. I have heard of these cracking, especially on lifted trucks where people grab the steering wheel to enter the passenger compartment.
