89 7.3 intake modifications

i have the 7.3 IDI in a 89 f250. Anyone know any good ways to route the intake behind the driver side headlight?

maybe if you relocate the fuel filter and relocate the driver side battery but other that that it looks like theres no room on that side for much.

You probably have the scoop mounted to the top of the radiator support. They (ford) moved it up there to keep road spray from getting into the intake, like on the older 6.9 models. If you want to get a little more air to the intake, try cutting the snorkel away on the sides and bottom. Hope this helps you out

snorkel? I was going to run it under the driverside battery mount. looked like there mite be a little room to run it there. It would be able to pull cooler air behind the headlite

my 91 f350 had the scoop mounted on the top of the radiator support over the battery. i took the radiator support bracket off the driver side and put a brace from the top of radiator to the radiator support. take the scoop and turm it 90% and it will slide right in the opening all the way to the grill. then took 4" aluminum dryer ducting and connected to air cleaner. straightened out the mounts on the scoop and used zip ties to the grill. contact me for pictures since i don't have enough posts to attach pictures.

I will try running a 4 inch dryer vent tube behind the headlight to pull some cooler air.

Great pics dave, did you have to modify the support bracket for the radiator? Can you tell the difference in power while going down the highway?
Is the 4x10 piece from a house floor vent? great idea

I removed the bracket. I also had to cut the front flange off the radiator.
I used a 1" x 1/4" flat steel to support the radiator top to the shell.
I also fabricated the scoop from an old furnace duct plenum. I looked at all the places that sell duct around here, could not find one that fit right. A couple of hours with metal tongs, snips, and a pop rivet gun resulted in what you see.

As far as the power goes, it made my turbo work better, enough that I could feel the difference over the stock intake tube. I also have a boost guage that tells me this will give you about 4 to 5 pounds of boost at 70 MPH on NA 6.9 or 7.3 motor.

The front of the scoop is 4 x 10 inches.
That reduces to 3 x 9 inches where it passes the radiator.
Then it transitions to a 6" round duct.
Then a 6 x 4 reducer.
Then a 4" single wall adjustable ell.
That will let the stock 4" plastic flex hose on the air cleaner slide over the ell.

Works well without the grill, I made a slight miscalculation in my measurements when I bent the scoop that does not let the grill fit back in. I have been working to much to have time to take it out to fix it so the grill will clear the scoop. When I do I will take more pictures so you can see it better.

I cropped this picture and added a little light to it so you can see better.

To the right of my scoop you can see where the stock intake was on my 86, the little rectangular hole was it.

But remember you do not see 4 to 5 till you are running 70 MPH.
But then also if you go from a 3 or 4 vacuum to 1 or 2 positive pressure inside the air filter, you made a big improvement.
