I just bought '85 F150XL 4x4/302/manual transmission. 29k miles on odo, but who knows. Engine was rebuilt, so was tranny and transfer case. The electrics seem sound. Truck runs like a champ when it's cold and rainy. The uglier the weather, the better it likes it. BUT!!!! It skips and stutters like a brahma bull when it's warm and dry. Changed all fuel filters, replaced both fuel pumps (2 tanks), nipped the ends and re-attached vacuum lines, replaced coil. acts and feels like fuel starvation, but...?
Just an idea, but if the temp is warm an muggy, then the fuel tank could be stopped up, causing the tank to pull a vaccum, thus creating a vapor lock situation, when its cold, there isn't any vapor lock, suggestion...check the fuel tank charcoal canister for wrong vaccum connections, or the line could be crimped somplace...
It sounds to me like your fuel pump is maybe getting too hot. I had that happen to an 83 F-150 I had. My Dad suggested I change it out, and bingo, it worked. Sounds crazy, but it worked.

It is 6" from the carborator. When fuel is cool it is more dense. This thing is often overlooked cost $42.00 from FORD. I don't know any way to test it.
I have been all thru this with a 1985 F350/360. Installed everything new than went back and exchanged the new with the old parts over 30 days time till I found the bad part, The Vapor separator. Good Luck Larry
