needin some power
example; my dad has a 1977 dodge truck he is restoring it has a 318 w/ auto trans. every time he catches me out in my truck he just blisters my a$$, i can't keep up
he can power brake his and you can't see his truck, i try it and all i get is nothing!!! throw some ideas at me guys, i would like to bust his a$$ for once I ran a 318 as a kid and they are about the same as a 302. I couldn't smoke 351s until I put 340 heads on it and did a lot of other stuff so if he is stock, you should be staying with him or beating him if you had the same gearing.
More power? How much do you want to spend? How do you drive it. A truck should have low end but you could set it up like a race car and get top end.
Assuming you are carburated,
Good air breather that lets more than stock in.
bigger carb and hotter intake manifold, 600 cfm or so( don't go too big or you will bog),
headers,
3" single exhaust or dual 2 1/2 but you might lose a bit of low end.
High flow muffler.
If you are smog exempt, advance your timing
Getting more pricey
ditch the stock cooling fan and get electric but for these trucks you need expensive ones that usually need a hotter alternator and wiring mods to handle the added current.
Hotter spark - i.e. MSD ignition, good wires etc.
under drive pulleys
Have heads worked,
bore the block a bit,
bigger cam......
price is the limit of how much power you can get but at what point does it get silly? Head work needs to be carefully researched so you don't gain high end power at the expense of low end power.
Basics though are easy air in, easy air out, let it breath but don't get rid of all your back pressure or you lose low end torque.
Good Luck,
Lee
