Where were you when you were 23-25 years old? I'm going to be 24 next month and I feel as though I'm stuck in a major rut in my life. My financial and living situation is really getting me frustrated. I'd love to be back out in the country again rather than being stuck in this cramped apartment. There's a nice chunk of other stuff going on that's bothering me, too, but there's not much that can be done about that. Anyways, figured I would ask to see if I'm the only one that's going through this. Enough of my .
When I was 24, I was on Long Island at a job I didn't like and commuting into the city. I lived in a basement studio apartment that I was paying $650 a month for (~5 years ago). In the summer, the humidity was so intense it was unbearable. I bought a dehumidifier to help, but it created so much heat that the humidity was actually better. It was so humid that the pipes in the suspended ceiling would sweat, dripping water on the ceiling tiles. Mold would then grow on the ceiling in the shape of the pipes.
Did I mention the crickets? They would find their way into my apartment and chirp. Chirp. Chirp. All night long. I eventually bought a bottle of Clorox clean up and I'd spray the things when I found them.
And the commute - an hour and a half each way meant I was up at 5:30 every morning and wasn't home until 7 or later every night.
Lets see, I was a single mother, no child support (dead-beat dad), working at K-Mart at a min. wage job, thumbing rides to get to the sitter and work, luckily found a one room place I could afford, eggs & taters were my main once-a-day meal so the boy got what he needed. Once I found a sitter that would keep my boy longer hours I found a second job and never looked back.
That was over 20 years ago and all I can say is that I fit that old Virginia Slims commercial - I've come a long way baby.
Work hard and be willing to do almost anything to get ahead and you'll get where you want to be. I've ran heavy equipment, layed shingles, coctail waitressed, bar tended, road-side flag girl, OTR driver, store clerk....pretty much anything that would pay what it took to survive.
At this point, I'm tired of taxes & accounting and have to begin thinking about what I want to do when I grow up (again).
Good luck and hang in there - things do get better.
Hasn't happened yet Justin. I'd like to have graduated from school, and be on my way to work, either at my own business, or for someone else. Just doin' what I like to do.
when I was 24 I was just finishing up my second year as a police. By then I had been in the Army Guard at 17 as a helicopter mechanic,(later went to Air Guard as a weapons instructor) Had 2 years as an apprentice plumber, was a cook, pizza driver, warehouseman, wharehouse manager, floor guard at roller rink, forklift operator, and worked private security (rent-a-cop) for 3 different companies.
and I wonder why I tired all the time now I 31 LOL! Follow the path wisely, many forks in teh road. When the rut hits, ponder your choices wisely, there may be something better, but grass is not always greener
By that time, I hope to be out of the house and doing a steady job, have completed some of my education that will put me in even better work as I get older. But thats the future and the time to make it that way is now.
In college, working full time, so poor I couldn't pay attention. Everyone was better off than me! I was rich though, with friends. I miss those days. I now have more money than God. I also have so much responsibility that time is the most valuable asset. Be careful what you wish for.
Do the best with what you have and do it now. (Jerry Clower)
I was a First Officer for American Connection. I made it into the airlines a little less than a year before 9-11. I was very, let me stress the very portion, fortunate to get a job with this particular airline. Now I am a Captain and still employed.
right now is the time to find your passion! think hard about the things that you enjoy doing and try to figure out how to make money doing them. if you asked me when i was 23 what i was into i'd ave told you, "nuthin'".
but what i didnt realize was that my hobbies (fixing cars, playing guitar, and breaking radios ) were things that could make me a lot of money.
at 23 i was working at a full service gas station checking old ladies' oil.
i found out about a job at a scenery shop, i went in and told the owner how good i was at everything and he laughed and said he would start me out as a runner.
now im a stage tech. at a las vegas show (mamma mia) and my job involves music, electronics and mechanics. the girls are pretty hot too!
the first step is realizing what you want, the next step is moving towards it.
good luck!
I am 24, 3 months before I turned 24 I graduated college. 2 months before that I got my job in a power plant and am making $46K+ per year. I still live at home on the farm getting ready to build a pole barn house. My best freind is the same age, making slightly less, is married and expecting thier first child in May. At times he's envious of me and I'm envious of him. Another friend of mine just moved to Florida to pursue his dream of becoming a chef. Before this job I detailed cars at the local Ford dealership (tough being in and out of all the new Fords all the time and not being able to afford one, then, worked as a sheetemetal worker for three years (almost bought into that business), worked in a lumberyard, was self employed for a short time, guided quail hunts, and worked on several farms at the same time. Just work hard and be a good person and sooner or later it will pay off.
