does a diesel have fuel pumps in the fuel tanks like efi motors do? the reason im asking is the diesel i just bought hasnt had the rear tank used in a while. the front tank works fine but when i switch to the rear tank the truck surges real bad and eventually will lose power.this may be because of bad fuel but i was told they had a pump in the tank.if this is so then i figured that could be the problem.if it is fuel then is there any kind of additive i could put in to correct the problem.thanks a load guys.
by the way those of you that answered my post about the starter switch/pedal linkage question i found the problem.it was wore out bushings in the pedal assembly that allowed the shaft to actually egg-shape the aluminum housing. anew housing and new bushings and now it works like a champ.thanks for the help guys, kevin.
no, there is no fuel pump in the fuel tank on diesels, there is, however a fuel pickup tube inside the tank with a plastic thingy on it, and this plastic always gets brittle and breaks apart so it will not run under 1/4 tank, if you have more than a 1/4 tank, try filling it up and running it like that, it could also be a fuel line from the back tank to the fuel switcher the is cracked/unhooked/a rat chewed a hole in it/ or something that is letting air get in the lines somehow, if it is not real hard to start back up afterwards, then it is a plugged up fuel line most likelyblow air back into the tank with an air compressor or something, check your fuel in water drain to see if you have any water in your fuel filter, if there is water in there, pull your bed off and drain the fuel and get a rag and clean your tanks out. as for fuel additive, i would try lucas fuel treatment, it says a quart is good for 100 gallons, but i have used a gallon in my truck before all at one time and it didnt hurt it, it sure did make my fuel injectoin pump work good tho. i put 1/2 gal. in each tank
The Tank Is Full So Thats Not The Problem.it Could Be A Line Problem Like You Said But Before I Go Through All That Is There Anyway I Can Tell If The Fuel Is Any Good Or Not?i Have No Idea How Old It Is.thanks,kevin.
check the transfer switch. climb under truck, find switch, have someone flip the switch on the dash. make sure it is switching. should be able to hear it click, or hold onto it and you can feel it switch. i had one go bad, left me stranded in wyoming for 4 days. my truck went 35 miles before it died. had 2 fuel pumps put on, one at little america, one at ford dealer, towed 4 times between the two shops and neither one could figure it out. had ford transfer to empty tank from full one because i knew it worked and drove it home. climbed under truck in my driveway and figured it out in less than 10 minutes. guess i should have became a mechanic. lol
well, if the fuel has been in there since before you bought the truck, just get a 3/8's or so fuel line and sihon the fuel out of the back tank and refuel with clean diesel fuel. you won't be out anything since it was there since before you had the truck. it could be gasoline or water for all you know. you should be able to get all but about 1-2 gallons out of it with asihon hose, there is some reason (evidently) why the fuel in the back tank has not been used in a while. or it may be that the back tank's fuel sending unit doesn't work right and it just registers full... unless you have indeed filled it up before. if it is full of clean diesel and still runs rough on back tank, then check the lines from the back tank to the fuel switcher. these would be the absolute easiest thing to check and always check the easiest things first, could save you a lot of trouble in the long run. i hope you have good luck. either that or just get a 60 gal. aux. fuel tank to put under your tool box and never worry about it.
