Based upon what has been discussed in previous threads asking same, the 305/75X16 seems to be the max tire width WITH NO LIFT OR SUSPENSION MOD'S that will not hit on a wheel-to-wheel full lock turn (on flat ground, of course!). That size is pushing the limit on the stock 16X7" rim though. Most FTE'rs here (not all, but most!) recommend going to a 16X8" rim from the 285/75X16 and up.
Hope this helps. You also may want to check out the "sticky" thread at the opening of this Super Duty forum. It's in RED. One of them talks about tires, suspensions, and combinations thereof. Have a gander and if you're still uncertain, write back and we'll all see if we can confuse you even further!!
I have a 99 F250 SuperDuty and I had 305/70R16 tires on the stock rims. I was told that even though the tires are a bit wide for the rim, they shouldn't wear prematurely. That turned out to not be true. The tires did not rub though, just wore out in the center after about 20000 miles.
I ordered some new tires just like the old ones (Nitto Terra Grappler) except they are 285/75R16. I also bought some new wheels too. They are 8" wide instead of the 7". That should solve the wearing down the center problem.
The only thing I am concerned with is the offset. I'm not sure what the offset is on the stock rims and the ones I bought (off ebay) are a -20mm offset. Does anyone know what the stock alloy wheels are as far as offset? Is a -20mm gonna stick out further than stock and if so, how much? I guess I should have researched it a little more before I bought them. Hopefully, they don't stick out too far.
After doing some supercomputer-like calculations I have been able to determine with virtually no certainty that the wheels will stick out about 1.5" further at each wheel. That seems manageable.
The new rim is 1 inch wider so that moves the wheel .5 inches right from the get-go. Then I found out the stock rim has a +6mm offset. Add that to a -20mm offset and I come up with a -26mm difference. I figure that to be just over 1 inch so I came up with a 1.5" difference.
The chances of that being right are about the same as Jesse Ventura getting elected Governor of Minnesota, but who knows, anything is possible.
I got the new tires and rims mounted and put on the truck. They look great. No rubbing, they don't stick out hardly any further than stock. So far (1 day, 500 miles) I ma very happy!!!
Great looking tire/wheel set-up! A marked improvement over the previous set-up. Really improves the trucks overall look considerably. Nice choice of wheels.... and nice ride overall!!!

sounds like you ran a bit too much tire pressure. try putting a chalk line across your tires and drive(1 or 2 tire revolutions) a short bit in a straight line to see if your tires are contacting the road evenly.

I did do that but it got down to less than 40 lbs in the rear. That is far too low to be safe. Not only is that too low to be safe, the truck was squirrelly as hell. The tires are just too wide for the stock rims. A few people told me that would happen, but of course I thought they didn't know what they were talking about.

I was told 295's were the biggest so to be a little conservative I put 285's on stock rims on my '02 f350 CC PSD. No adverse wear but I rotated them every oil change (3k). The only rub problem I had was going in or out of driveways or a U-turn in a "full lock" position and then all it did was rub the liner a little bit which was not a very big deal to me.
Yeah, the Nitto Terra Graps I have and also the BFG's I had @ 295x75x16 on stock rims rub at full turn. They are wearing like they should. Only reason they wear out faster is because of Banks and Superchips!
