Cruise control speed detector
On my speedometer cable, right past the firewall in the engine compartment, sits a little metal thingy with 2 wires coming out of it. I have a fuzzy memory but I believe this was plugged into my cruise control when it was still operational. Can anyone tell me what this is? I'm thinking maybe a hall effect sensor . . . so if it is can I use these two wires to operate an Autometer electronic speedometer?

It is not a hall effect device. It puts out an AC voltage waveform that varies in amplitude with speed also. Some electronic speedo's should work fine. The signal could always be rectified and clipped with some diodes.

Diodes and rectification are all way over my head (I've tried but just can't grasp electronics). I guess I'll just buy the sending unit that clips over the end of the speedometer cable. Thanks for the info guys.

Ask Autometer if it will work. They may just want you to buy their part but then again they might be helpful... Those "thingy's" were used for many years. I am sure they know how they work.
