this ain't right....i need help!

alright, i own an '88 Bronco II XL 4x4. some wierd things have been happening lately. first off, my truck shifts into 4x4 high and low fine, but when it's engaged the back drive tire drags at times, you can hear the rubber squealing as it's pulled across the pavement, also the front end clunks and jumps and when i go to shift out of 4 wheel drive, it stays engaged until i drive it aways and then it eventually clunks out. i am pretty sure there's something wrong with the transfer case, is this something i can take apart and fix or is it easier to just replace it? the rear wheel dragging perplexes me though, it only happens when it's in 4 wheel drive and a little while after i take it out. never happens in 2 wheel drive. anyone got any ideas? it might have something to do with the fact that it spent 3 days in a mudhole up to the headlights, but that was six months ago and this stuff just started happening recently. could haveing a different size spare have something to do with it? beats me...i'm gonna read my haynes manual cover to cover. and help is appreciated. thanks.

I would probally check the transfer case for moister, dump the fluid and add some fresh fluid. It also might be a gear timing issue in the transfer case. with in doubt get one at a bone yard, but make sure that it is match with the same rear end as yours.

If the spare is a different diameter than this is causing the excessive binding and slipping in 4WD, it may eventually cause drivetrain damage. The different size tires are trying to rotate at different speeds. The front and rear driveshafts are locked together in 4WD so it is critical that the tire sizes and gear ratios are equal. It will not come out of 4WD until the binding nears zero even though you shifted to 2WD. Do not use 4WD until you install equal size tires. Also do not operate a "part time 4WD" on dry pavement.

You have bent the internal shift fork as well as probably stripped the leading edge of the teeth off the gear set, this is a weak point in these transfer cases.
