anyone out there know how to get that pesky clutch fan off the pully assy? mine is pretty much dead and i need to replace it but i havent got the foggiest idea. after removing every bolt on the darn thing all im left with is the large nut in the middle that just spins when you put a wrench to it. 88 b2 2.9 liter
They have to special tools for that.autozone will loan them to you at no charge. One to hold the unit from turning & the other to remove the nut. In an emergency I have used a super long screw driver wedged on two of the the smaller fan bolts to keep the unit from turning & than used channel locks for the big bolt. Also to unscrew go clockwise.
Back when I had my 2.9 Ranger, I got the tool from Autozone. The Autozone near me had it listed only for the 4.9 I6. The on thing I remeber was that they are left hand threads too. Good luck.
Step 1: remove fan/pulley assembly from water pump flange.
Step 2: get a 16" flex fan and spacer from your local parts store.
Step 3: install flex fan and spacer.
Step 4: relax because you'll NEVER have to replace one of those @#%^&*! fan clutches EVER again
My apologies... in a mood... and I don't particularly care for clutch fans *shrug*
