transmission question

on average how much would a complete trans rebuild be and how bout a band adjustment? my trans seems to slip on heavy load its not too bad on a minor acceleration on level grond but if your going uphill it just doesnt seem to have the oomph that it should have and you can see thec rpms rising with little or no increase in speed
this is a1988 b2 2.9 with the auto with od trans im wondering also has anyone ever had any succes with the those pour in trans fixers
money is about to get tight here so im looking for the cheapest fix i can get
thanx steve

I don't know about cost but you can adjust the bands yourself. All you need is an accurate torque wrench that will measure 10 ft lbs and a square socket for the adjustment screws, I forget the size but it is near 5/16". There is a special torque wrench available for this but it is not necessary. For example my 89 A4LD has overdrive and intermediate band adjustments. There are 2 "square head" screws with lock nuts on the left (driver's) side of the transmission. Loosen the 2 locknuts and back them off to near the end of the screw threads while holding the screws from rotating. Tighten the screws to 10 ft lbs. Back off the screws exactly 2 turns. Tighten the lock nuts while holding the screws from rotating. Check a service manual to be sure the specs are the same for your vehicle as the ones I've mentioned.
Slipping can also be caused by a faulty vacuum modulator that you can replace yourself for about $25. Otherwise the trans. is probably worn requiring a rebuild.

transmission question

Can you tell me more about replacing the vacuum modulator? I have an 86 B2 4x4 limited with auto transmission and O/D when I accelerate from 50-55mph the tranny kicks out of gear until I let off the gas the kicks into passing gear(hard) and will work as long as you accelerate gradually. I was told that it was probably a faulty modulator valve or a vacuum hose gone bad. I bought a modulator valve but can't seem to figure out how to get to it. Any ideas?
