Hey I was wondering what I should do to make my exhaust loud and turn peoples heads. I do have emissions tests here so the cat has to stay on. I dont really want to spend to much money on my exhaust... Let me know what to do to get that deep rumble.???
I don't know if it would be emissions legal (no inspection in my state) but on my old cherokee with a straight six I just replaced the muffler with a pipe and left the cat on. It sounded nice but was not obnoxiously loud.
You can't get that deep V-8 rumble with a 6, not even that great big Ford 6!
There's different firing frequency, only 3 times per engine revolution, plus all the sound comes out the same pipe. To get any "rumble" at all you'd have to separate the cylinders into two systems, to mimic the two banks of a V-8.
You CAN however make it loud, which always impresses the high-schoolers at the drive-in...
Or you could put in the dual-tailpipe muffler from a late '80's 351W Bronco, the one with chrome tips. It looks good and is fairly low in backpressure.
Walker has a line of premium replacement mufflers that features this muffler, and it sounds pretty good.
