I have a 99 f150 with a V6. I am getting a knocking noise when I put it in gear but the noise greatly reduces in sound when I put in park or neutral. I removed the belt and I get no noise at all. All the pulleys and tensioners seem to be OK.
Does anyone have an idea what could be causing it. Thanks MEH
How many miles on your engine?
Sometimes if the main bearings are worn the belt will pull up on the crankshaft and cause a knock.
Since the noise changes in park and neutral it's also possible that you have a worn thrust bearing on the crankshaft. In gear there is extra force pushing the crankshaft ahead and if the thrust bearing is bad it can cause a knock. You can test for this by prying the crankshaft back and forth by the balancer on the front of it. There should be between .004-0.008" of end play.
