custom intake

I have recently added a set of shorty headers and 3" cat back duels, and now i figure i need to open my intake up a little more. Spending $230 on a fipk from k&n doesnt fly to well with me, when it seems like all im buying is the filter and some brackets. I saw that the filter used in the kit was only 50 or 60 bucks. has anyone had good results with just buying the filter or any other universal filters for that matter. The truck is a 95 250 4x4 5.8 no mass air. any help on a custom setup would be appreciated.

with a little more research in the forums I have seen that installing the cold air inlet to my stock setup and a little reflective wrap would work well. How much of a pain is it to attach the air inlet to the stock box? Would that setup work better than the cold air inlet to an open filter? thanks for any help.

Yup, I bought the K&N replacement filter (RF-1012 I think?), a couple of 3" muffler couplings and an L-bracket and made my own FIPK. Take a look at my gallery for pics of the setup, it's a pretty straightforward mod.

would i need a thermal barrier on my intake if i used heat jackets on my headers? Would one be better than the other?
