please could someone tell me where I can find a diagram, or some such,
that will show me how to take the steering wheel off to replace the ignition.
there is no key, and ford cant make one for it they say... if anyone can help, please please do
Hi and welcome to the forum
Did you get it figured out yet?
You dont have to remove the steering wheel to get the ignition lock cylinder out.
You remove the 2 covers over the steering column, behind the wheel and it's right there.
The problem is that without a key you can't remove the lock cylinder without getting a bit uhh forceful
You'll probably have to drill it out and remove it in pieces. You have to be careful doing that because you can damage the column.
Have you checked with a locksmith? They might be able to cut a key that will work.
go to your Ford dealers parts manager. He may be able to get a key code from the vin number. Only managers can access the database. A few models are not available but most are.
drilling was what i was hoping to avoid, one question on it, should you drill out an area the size of the whol cylinder? like an 3/4 inch or so? Im so used to the 70s model ford pickups...ahhhh the ease of the oldies
thanks again
I've used a slide hammer to pop a couple out. Like racerguy said it does take a little work. Slid hammer, big flat screwdriver for turning the lock. I've done this to a 1993 e350 and some other ford car.
Now this 1993 I did this to was a bus cut away that had only the 2 front doors. I used a set of locks from a 1984 van and put them in, so then there was 2 keys instead of 1 key. worked great with no problems.
A locksmith should be able to make up a key. They have a way of making a key up using depth keys or something. Call a good one and not some guy that thinks he's a locksmith. They can do the doors at the same time. On a ford key I think its the tip cuts are for the ingnition and the key ring end for the doors. I could be wrong though.

You will have to buy a new cylinder anyway. So if you buy one from Napa, they come with an instruction how to go about this one. (includes a cylinder and 2 new keys)
I did not have to drill, as I still had a key which worked " a little".
But as I said, the instructions how to drill and where, are included.
If you still want to go ahead, let me know, and I 'll see if I still have the old box and instructions.
