I was recently on the Boss snow plow website and looked up the plow aplication for my 2000 F350 CC long bed lariat PSD and under the manufacturers recomendations Ford does not recomend putting a plow on this vehicle? does anyone have any insight on this? any info would be great. The only thing I could think of would be the loooong wheelbase.
There are two reasons, both are because its a crew cab. 1. Ford, as well as Dodge and GM, don't recomend plowing with people in the back seat. 2. There is already extra weight on the front due to it being a crew, which reduces the amount of weight you can carry.
That being said plenty of people put plows on them anyway. Just make sure if there are people in the back that they are buckled up. If not they will wind up in the front if you hit something and come to a sudden stop.
I put one on my truck and Ford didnt recomend it either. You may need to put in air bags up front cause the truck will bottom out your shocks when the plow is raised and you hit a bump. I will be putting them on my truck this fall
Changing the front spring to X code will work too. Those are the plow package springs. You only can get those springs from Ford in a reg. cab or super cab short bed. But it should work fine. I have a 02' F-350 DRW dump body with a V10 at work with a fisher 9' plow and it works just fine without the X springs. If I had a diesel that might be a different story with the weight of a diesel.
JMACC - The reason why is that your vehicle combination of crew cab and PSD engine with a plow exceeds the load rating of the front axle. Yes people go ahead and put plows on, but the plow manufacturer and Ford can deny any warranty work if they so choose and some dealers will not do the install for you.
sam973 - There is no issue with installing a plow on a vehicle with a back seat. If you check the plow manufacturer websites you will see SUV's and Extended Cabs for all makes. You are correct in that they prefer that you don't have a vehicle full of people when plowing to avoid injuries.
Thanks Ronin007 for the info, so I take it that replacing the front springs with the X codes would only benefit the weight on the front end and not on the axle? Thanks again for the reply.
That would be correct. When I ordered my '99 SD SC I wanted the PSD but it kept getting kicked out of the order system. When we contacted Ford directly that was the answer that I got. I wasn't satisfied so I contacted Western, Myers, and Fisher directly and got the same answer. I doubt that it should be any different with your 2000. I needed the plow and the SC more than I needed the PSD so I got the V10 instead.
With that said I have seen several SD's with the exact combination that I wanted and your setup with plows on them. I am assuming that the owners are just taking the chance with the front axle. It is your call. I didn't with mine as it was a brand new truck and I wanted the warranty on both the truck and plow.
