Closed Knuckle 44 vs 44HD?

Closed Knuckle 44 vs 44HD?
Can anyone tell me the difference between the Dana 44 and 44HD or the big ball closed knuckles? How do I tell what I have in my 71 f250? Can I mount disc brakes on either?

The small ball D44-3,000lbs, 4:09 open carrier. The bigball D44 - 3,500lbs, 4:09 open carrier. The small ball knuckles are a bit bigger than a softball and the bigball knuckles are much bigger.
I have a 71 F250 and it came stock with a small ball. It now has a locked big ball. If you plan on doing some mean 4xing you might consider putting an open knuckle 44 or even better a D60 in the front. The klosed knuckles are known to break. I do some low key rock crawling and pull logs for my cabin with mine, no problems yet.
As far as I know you can not put disk brakes on a closed knuckle D44.
