Starting Problems

Just started having a issue.

Having a hard time starting the truck. It's not consistant when though. Sometime it will sit for 3 days and fire right up. Some days it will crank and crank and nothing even though I ran it the night before. Idle is fine in park most of the time. In drive, idle is sometimes good, sometimes it misses like crazy and stumbles. Sometimes it is fine in drive. On occation I will run it for ten mintues to the store, come back out and it will just crank and crank. I almost have to play with the gas pedal and key just right to get it to turn over. I have replaced the following:

Fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs, air cleaner, battery. Fuel pump was a few months ago. Carb is original but I replaced accelerator pump diaphram about 1-1/2 years ago. Ignition module is about 2-3 years old.

This truck always started fine. 3 pumps on the gas and fired right up. Now it is like I am afraid to shut it off cause it might not start back up again. Any ideas?

Thanks guys.

Check to see if it's a spark problem by pulling off a spark plug wire and holding it close to a spark plug while cranking it with the key ON (get help or use a remote starter switch). At least then you can narrow down the problem.

78,
I've had similiar problems with mutiple trucks.
It's probably your dura spark ignition module.
This would explain the no start/start condition.
If it actually is missing while running, this points to another problem;
Stator pickup in distributor.
Your description is pointing towards the stator pickup.
You can buy a distributor rebuild kit at the auto parts store.
You'll save yourself some money, if you rebuild.
Replacing the distributor will work as well.
Good Luck,
KingFisher

Well, I am still having problems. I pulled each plug wire off one at a time while the truck was running. I am getting spark, but the truck did not seem to run any different at all. Also when I pulled the vac line running to the vacuum advance on the distributor the idle dropped and it sounded like the alternator was knocking almost but the miss and rough running diappeared. Ran the truck down the road that way for a bit and it actually ran good??? Any ideas? Thank guys......

Have you done a compression check? Also, how many miles are on this engine? A lot of cranking is often a sigh that the cam is out of time. You should consider the possibility that the timing chain has stretched alot, or even jumped a tooth. Good luck

Haven't done a compression check yet. Engine has about 85,000 miles on it.

Well, started wrenching on it last night. Seems the hot air vent line to the choke housing is rusted away. Also the EGR was pretty dirty and I am not sure it is functioning 100% correct. I'll be replacing both these things and let you all know how it turns out.
