Quirky Problem
Quirky Problem
I've got an 86 bronco 2, 2.9L EFI, 4WD, 5SPD Manual tranny.
Have recently acquired a wierd problem. Engine cuts out intermittently. Its almost like someone reached over and turned off the key for a split second. Well maybe a second or two.
I ran the code checker on the engine and noticed that the
continous memory codes showed a 14 and a 33. Now the 33 is an EGR Valve problem, which might make the engine run rougher than it
should or knock the emissions figures off...but I don't think
it will cause a severe problem (random total shutdowns) as I'm
experiencing. The 14 code...however...is a loss of the PIP signal.
According to the ignition diagrams in the factory emissions book...the
PIP signal is generated in the distributor and sent to the TFI
and then to the computer. So...
1) Will loss of the PIP signal cause the engine to shutdown/the computer possibly to stop firing the injectors?
2) If this is the case should I replace the distributor?
3) Is it possibly an ignition coil problem?
I dont think this is a fuel pressure problem as the fuel pressure
has always checked good. (39 psi key on...32/31 psi engine running)
By the way this is the original distributor body and the vehicle has
about 220,000 miles on it.
Any help is appreciated!

I think your right on it in that it is in the dist. or one of the wires or conections with the dist. assembly. Check all connections first then I would look at either the ignition module or the pick-up sensor in the dist.
