429 Pinging

I have a 71 429 with D0VE heads and when the vacum line on the distributer is hooked up i get the famous pinging but it's as bad with 92 octane the owner before just kept the vacum line off is this ok to do? Also i want to get an aluminum intake what would be the best to get? i have to replace the gasket on the intake it's leaking and i don't mind taking a look at the engine a bit. the only thing i know what has been done to the engine is the valve seals and that was 14 years ago i need to do them again.

the reason it doesn't ping as much with the vacum line disconnected it isn't advancing the timing so much, so check your timing it may be very high to start with, and with the DOVE heads it is a High comp engine so needs all the octane it can get, and probably needs a little less timing, on that engine with todays gas I would guess your base timing should be around 6, and total about 32 max to keep it from pinging on 92 octane

Thanks yeah right now iam just working on the body right now, after that iam doing a tune up and everything
